It's beginning to look a lot like winter!

As of today, February 8, 2023, due to weather conditions the ice rink is closed until further notice.

The ice rink has a strong demand for skate helpers, the red plastic devices that provide support for beginning skaters. The rink would like to purchase five more for about $200 each and are seeking donations to make this happen. There is a location on the front of the skate helper to recognize donors. Please contact City Hall at 231-582-6597 if you would like to make a donation.

Avalanche winter park activities: Trails are being groomed on a regular basis for walking/snowshoeing and biking. There is snow on the sledding hill for sledding and plenty of ice made and broomed for skating.  Restrooms are available and there is an attendant onsite for assistance and to provide the loaned skates and sleds.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Public Works at 231-582-0375 or via email at maintenance@boynecity.com

The avalanche warming house hours will be 11 am to 9 pm daily over the holidays with limited hours on Christmas.

Regular hours of operation for the warming house / attendant are as follows (weather permitting):
            Monday - Friday..................4:00 - 9:00
            Saturday & Sunday...........11:00 - 9:00

Holidays throughout the winter when school is not in session will follow the regular weekend hours of operation of 11a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Skating & sledding is allowed anytime (park closes at 10:30 p.m.); however, there is not any supervision outside of the regular hours of the warming house. The ice skating rink activity is weather dependent and availability for use may vary.

Free loaner skates are available for use; inquire within in the warming house. New and used skate donations are welcome at anytime; they can be dropped off at the warming house during hours of operation or at City Hall (319 N. Lake St.)

For more information call City Hall 231-582-6597.

Please skate and sled safely and responsibly. Enjoy!

Skate sharpening services are also available at Avalanche.  Contact the warming house attendant for details and arrangements.

Group Outing - 2013

To Whom It May Concern,
My husband coaches our local high school varsity girl’s basketball team, and we treated them (and his assistant coach and her family) to a weekend "up north" - which to us means Boyne City, Michigan. My husband's family has had a cottage on Lake Charlevoix since before we were married, and we have always enjoyed the many outdoor activities that are at our fingertips, both summer and winter.  Last weekend, we took the basketball team to Avalanche Mt. to go sledding.  The weather was perfect!  After an hour or so of that, were grateful to have the chance to test the ice skating rink out.  The ice was very smooth, the use of ice skates was free, and the complimentary hot chocolate was a big hit with all of us, as the kids (and dads) had gotten a fair amount of snow in the face from sledding!  The attendant at the ice rink was accommodating, and turned the music on the outdoor speakers for us to listen to while skating; it was a nice touch that the kids liked :)  There was also an exchange student from Finland with the group, who was the best ice skater of us all!  She loved it, and kept requesting that we take pictures of her ice skating :) My husband and I were glad to show the girls how nice it is "up north," and hope that they will encourage their families to take advantage of all that Michigan has to offer.   It was a great weekend, and we were happy that we could find something fun to do outside, while NOT spending an extreme amount of money.  We gladly gave a donation in the Avalanche Mt. ice rink warming house, and look forward to our next trip to Boyne City.  Keep up the great atmosphere! I forgot to mention that there were sleds available to borrow in the little building, and we were able to use them (we had 15 people total sledding, and only had about 5 sleds), so that was nice, too!

Sincerely,
Karen Haire
