Boyne City - City Commission Election
City Commission terms are four years, and there are two open seats in the upcoming election.
The petition filing deadline is Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. If there are more than four qualified nominees there will be a Primary Election held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. If there are four or less qualified nominees, a Primary Election will not be held. The General Election will be Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
The method of nominating of all candidates for the city elections shall be by petition. Such petition for each candidate shall be signed by not less than 20 nor more than 40 registered electors of the city. No person shall sign his name to a greater number of petitions for any one office than there are persons to be elected to said office at the following regular city election. Where the signature of any individual appears on more petitions than he is so permitted to sign, such signatures shall be counted only to the extent he is permitted to sign in the order of the respective dates and hour of filing the petitions containing such signatures.
Candidates who seek a non-partisan office:
A candidate who seeks a non-partisan office must file an Affidavit of Identity and a Non-Partisan Nominating Petition which bears the required number of valid signatures.
Criteria Per Boyne City Charter (sections 4.6, 4.8, 6.1)
Signatures of not less than 20 or more than 40 registered electors of the City (4.6).
No person shall sign his/her name to a greater number of petitions for any one office than there are persons to be elected to said office.
(November 2023 election = 2 offices; 4 year terms).
When a petition is filed by persons other than the person whose name appears thereon as a candidate, it may be accepted only when accompanied by the written consent of the candidate (4.8).
The nominating candidate:
Shall have been a resident of the City for at least one year (6.1).
Shall not have been convicted of a felony (6.1).
Is a qualified and registered elector of the City (6.1).
Shall not be in default to the City (6.1).
